Computer Keeps Freezing or Crashing: Causes and Fixes
A computer that locks up solid, restarts without warning or drops to a blue screen is telling you something specific, and the pattern of when it happens is the most useful clue you have. Freezing only under load points at heat or power. Freezing at random, including when idle, points at memory or a failing drive. Blue screens naming the same file every time point at a driver. Before you spend money on anything, spend twenty minutes gathering the evidence below, because it separates a free fix from a hardware repair.
Note exactly when it happens
The pattern matters more than any single test. Write down what you were doing each time, how long the machine had been on, and whether it froze completely, restarted, or showed a blue screen with a message. Three or four incidents recorded properly will usually point straight at the cause.
Distinguish a true freeze from a slowdown too. If the mouse pointer still moves but nothing responds, a program is hung and Windows is alive. If the pointer is frozen solid and Caps Lock does not toggle its light on the keyboard, the whole system has stopped, which is a much stronger sign of hardware.
- Record the time, what was running, and how long the machine had been on.
- When it freezes, press Caps Lock and watch the keyboard light. No response means a full system lock.
- Note whether it happens under load, such as gaming or video calls, or at random including when idle.
- Photograph any blue screen and note the stop code and the file name it mentions.
- Check whether it started after a specific update, a new program or a new piece of hardware.
Read what Windows already recorded
Windows keeps a record of unexpected shutdowns and application failures, and Reliability Monitor presents it as a simple timeline that anyone can read. It is much friendlier than Event Viewer and it often names the culprit directly.
Look for the day the crashes began and see what else happened that day. A driver update, a Windows update or a newly installed program appearing right before the first red cross is a strong lead.
- Click Start, type reliability, and open View reliability history.
- Look at the timeline for red circles marking critical events.
- Click a red mark and read the details, noting any repeated file or program name.
- Check what was installed or updated on the day the crashes started.
- If one program is behind every crash, uninstall or reinstall it before going further.
Rule out overheating and dust
If the machine freezes during games, video calls, video editing or anything else demanding, and is fine for light browsing, heat is the leading suspect. Processors will throttle to protect themselves, but a badly clogged laptop or a desktop with a failed fan can shut down or lock up outright.
Thermal paste dries out over the years, and dust builds a felt like blanket over the heatsink fins. Neither is a fault as such, and both are entirely fixable, but both need the machine opened up.
- Listen for the fan. A fan that never spins up, or one that roars constantly, both point to a cooling problem.
- Feel the underside of a laptop or the exhaust of a desktop after twenty minutes of use.
- Shine a torch into the vents and look for packed dust.
- Keep laptops on hard surfaces and off beds and sofas.
- If the machine survives light use but dies under load, book a clean and repaste rather than reinstalling Windows.
Test the memory and the drive
Faulty memory produces exactly the pattern people describe as random. Crashes with no connection to what you were doing, different blue screen codes each time, and occasional corrupted files. Windows has a built in memory test that runs before the operating system loads.
A failing drive produces a different pattern. The machine hangs for thirty seconds or a minute and then recovers, files occasionally refuse to open, and the freezes cluster around opening or saving. Check the drive's own health reporting, because a drive that reports a problem is one to back up immediately rather than test further.
- Click Start, type memory, and open Windows Memory Diagnostic. Choose to restart and check now, and let the full pass complete.
- Back your important files up before doing anything else if you suspect the drive.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator and run wmic diskdrive get model,status to see the drive's basic self reported health.
- Run chkdsk C: /f from an administrator Command Prompt and allow it to schedule at the next restart.
- Listen for clicking or repeated spin up noises from a mechanical drive, which means stop using it and get the data copied off now.
Update or roll back the graphics driver
Graphics drivers cause a disproportionate share of freezes, particularly on machines used for games or with an external monitor. The tell is a screen that goes black for a few seconds and recovers with a message about the display driver, or a freeze that only ever happens in full screen applications.
Both directions are worth trying. If crashes began after a driver update, roll it back. If the driver is years old, update it from the manufacturer rather than through Windows Update, which often carries an older version.
- Right click Start and open Device Manager, then expand Display adapters.
- Right click your graphics card, choose Properties, then the Driver tab.
- If Roll Back Driver is available and the crashes are recent, use it.
- Otherwise download the current driver directly from Intel, AMD or NVIDIA for your exact model.
- Choose the clean installation option if the installer offers one, then restart and test.
