Computer Running Slow? How to Fix a Slow Windows 11 PC

Your PC takes three or four minutes to reach the desktop, the fan runs constantly, and clicking anything gives you the spinning blue circle. Slowness is the most common problem we get called about, and in most cases it is not a dying computer. It is usually too much software loading at startup, a drive that is nearly full, a mechanical hard drive that has reached the end of its useful life, or something running in the background that should not be there. Work through the checks below in order, because the early ones cost nothing and fix a surprising number of machines.

Start with a proper restart, not a shutdown

Windows 11 uses fast startup by default, which means a normal shutdown does not fully clear memory. A machine that has been closed and reopened for weeks builds up leaked memory and stuck processes. Restart is the only option that gives you a genuinely clean boot.

If the computer feels quicker for ten minutes after a restart and then crawls again, that points at a program or a driver rather than failing hardware, so keep reading.

  1. Click Start, then the power icon, then choose Restart rather than Shut down.
  2. Let the machine sit at the desktop for five minutes before judging the speed, because Windows finishes indexing and updating in that window.
  3. If the machine has not had a restart in over a week, make this a weekly habit.

Cut down what loads at startup

Almost every program you install adds itself to startup. Printer utilities, cloud storage clients, chat apps, game launchers and updaters all want to be running before you have opened anything. On a machine with 8GB of memory this alone can make the first few minutes after logging in unusable.

Turning off a startup item does not uninstall the program. You can still open it from the Start menu whenever you actually need it.

  1. Press Ctrl, Shift and Escape together to open Task Manager.
  2. Click Startup apps in the left sidebar.
  3. Sort by the Startup impact column so the heaviest items sit at the top.
  4. Right click anything you do not need the moment you log in and choose Disable. Safe candidates include Spotify, Steam, Epic Games, Adobe updaters and printer software.
  5. Leave your antivirus, audio driver, touchpad driver and OneDrive alone if you rely on them.
  6. Restart and see how the first two minutes feel.

Check whether the drive is the bottleneck

This is the biggest single cause of a slow older PC. A traditional spinning hard drive cannot keep up with modern Windows, and a machine that was fine a few years ago may now spend its whole life waiting on the disk. Task Manager will tell you honestly.

If the Disk column sits at or near 100 per cent while the processor is nearly idle, the drive is the problem. On a mechanical drive the fix is to fit a solid state drive, which is the most cost effective upgrade available and typically turns a two minute boot into something closer to fifteen seconds.

Free space matters too. Windows needs room to page memory to disk and to stage updates. Once a drive drops below roughly ten per cent free, everything slows down.

  1. Open Task Manager and stay on the Processes tab.
  2. Look at the percentages across the top for CPU, Memory and Disk.
  3. Click the Disk heading to sort, and note which process sits at the top.
  4. Open File Explorer, click This PC, and check the free space bar under your C drive.
  5. If space is tight, open Settings, then System, then Storage, and turn on Storage Sense to clear temporary files automatically.

Rule out overheating and thermal throttling

Laptops that live on a sofa, a bed or a lap pull cooling air through vents on the underside. Once those vents clog with dust and fibres the processor gets hot, and Windows deliberately slows it down to protect the hardware. The symptom is a machine that starts fine and gets steadily more sluggish, with a loud fan.

You can often confirm this without any tools. If the underside is uncomfortably warm and performance recovers after the machine has been off for an hour, heat is involved. A physical clean and fresh thermal paste restores full speed, and that is bench work rather than something anyone can do remotely.

  1. Use the laptop on a hard flat surface rather than fabric.
  2. Shine a torch into the vents and look for a felt like mat of dust.
  3. Open Settings, then System, then Power and battery, and set Power mode to Best performance while plugged in.
  4. If the fan is constantly loud and the case is hot, book a clean rather than buying software.

Clear out browser clutter and unwanted extensions

For a lot of people the computer is not slow, the browser is. Twenty open tabs, a couple of toolbars and a handful of extensions picked up alongside free downloads will eat memory faster than anything else on the machine. Coupon extensions and so called PC cleaners are the usual offenders.

  1. In Chrome or Edge, click the three dots menu, then Extensions, then Manage extensions.
  2. Remove anything you do not recognise or no longer use.
  3. Clear cached images and files from the last four weeks, but leave passwords and sign in data alone.
  4. Close tabs you are not using, or save them to a reading list instead of keeping them open.
